This registration makes it possible to change the mention of gender and given name in the birth registration.
After the change of sex and first name, the Citizen Card must be renewed witin 30 days.

Changing the mention of gender and given name in the civil registry is free of charge.
How request gender and given name change registration?
Go to a civil registry office and make a written request to change your gender and given name. In the request you have to mention:
- your Citizen's Card number
- your new given name.
If you are 16 or 17 years old you need it:
- to submit a medical report
The medical report should attest only to the child's ability to make informed decisions and willingness, without making reference to gender identity diagnoses. The report may be issued by any doctor or psychologist registered with the Order of Doctors or Psychologists.
- to express your free and informed consent to the change of gender and given name in the presence of a registrar.
You have 30 days to update the Citizen Card
You must update your Citizen Card within 30 days of registering a change of gender and changing your given name. You can renew the Citizen's Card online on the ePortugal portal.
Birth registration update
You can request the birth registration update at any civil registry office.
If you are a minor, updating your birth registration may be required by both parents, or by agreement with each other.
If you live abroad, make the request at the consulate
You can apply at the consular office in your area of residence. The consulate will send the documents to a civil registry office for the procedure to be decided.
